It was 2021 and a new generation of young people were exhilarated by by Chicago’s breakthrough song Make Me Smile, which was recorded in August 1969 and released in March 1970.

The voice? Terry Kath.

The writer? James Pankow.

The guitarist? Terry Kath.

The drums? Danny Seraphine.

The tight horns and tight band? Lee Loughnane on trumpet, Jimmy Pankow on trombone, and Walt Parazaider on tenor saxophone, Robert Lamm on piano, and Peter Cetera on bass.

But there is so much more to this song. “Make Me Smile” was actually part of “Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon” (sic), also known as “The Ballet” and “Make Me Smile Medley”, which is a nearly thirteen-minute mini-rock opera/song cycle/suite from Chicago’s 1970 album Chicago (also called Chicago II). In an introduction at a live concert, Terry Kath explained that the actual name of “Make Me Smile” is “Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon.” The radio version, of course, was the shorter “Make Me Smile” recording (hear “Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon” below).

VIEW THE TERRY KATH EXPERIENCE on YouTube

The Terry Kath Experience” is a documentary about a daughter discovering the legacy of her father: the late Terry Kath. In the documentary she introduces her uncle, Rodney Kath, who is Terry Kath’s brother and former police chief of the Arlington Heights Police Department. Terry Kath was one of the founding members of the band Chicago whose powerful guitar playing and husky, melodic voice has been praised by such icons as Jimi Hendrix, Joe Walsh and Eric Clapton. Before discovering his full potential as a guitarist and subsequent guitar icon, Kath’s life ended tragically at age 32. Terry’s daughter Michelle was only two years old when he passed, only coming to know him through his music and stories from her mother. After discovering a box of memorabilia, Michelle sets out on a journey to get to know her father and to search for his iconic lost guitar. In this documentary, Michelle interviews her dad’s family, bandmates and good friends, as well as prominent musicians, to piece together the life of her father, one of the great unsung rock legends on the 1970s.
