Amazon founder Jeff Bezos briefly held the richest man in the world status on July 27, 2017 when he edged out Bill Gates $91B to $90B during the day, but by the end of the day Bill Gates was on top $89.7B to $88.5B.
Bezos founded Amazon.com on July 5, 1994 after making a cross-country drive from New York to Seattle. He is known to have written up the Amazon business plan during the trip. He initially set up the company in his garage in Seattle.
